Meet the Hygienists

Our Hygiene Department believes very strongly in patient education to prevent oral health problems before they occur.  Our team takes pride in their armory of techniques, and were praised at the 2008 National RDH convention for their innovation with instrumentation and sterilization techniques.  Understanding that many medical issues have now been linked to dental plaque, their moto is "A Clean Mouth Leads To A More Healthy Body".  The following picture and biographies will help you learn more about our team members.

Courtney Shultz

            Courtney, Susan, Melanie

Courtney was born right here at MCV Hospital in downtown Richmond.  Growing up, her father was a well known Pediatrician in the Richmond area.  She attended Trinity Episcopal and then went off to Harrisonburg, Virginia to attend James Madison University.  After graduation, Courtney attended the Medical College of Virginia School of Dental Hygiene and graduated in 1982.  She worked for several different offices in the Richmond area before starting with Dr. Freeman in 1994.  Courtney and her husband live in the Bon Air community, and their two daughters have always been heavily involved with swimming.  In her spare time, she enjoys reading and relaxing with her family at Lake Gaston.

Susan Seward

Susan is a Richmond native who graduated from Freeman High School before attending Old Dominion University.  At ODU, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene.  She has been working as a hygienist for close to 30 years and started with our office in 1997.  Susan believes the best part of working as a hygienist is the patients and looks forward to seeing and talking with her “regulars”.   “We have a great family of patients!”  She and her husband live outside of Montpelier, Virginia and love being in the country.  Her two daughters are now grown and starting their own paths in life.

Penny Williams

Penny has been working in the dental field as a hygienist for nearly 25 years and has been with Dr. Freeman for over 10 years now.  She was born in Mechanicsville, Virginia and attended Henrico High School.    After graduation, she left the area to attend Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg.   Always having an interest in medicine, Penny entered the Medical College of Virginia School of Dental Hygiene.  She enjoys sharing her professional knowledge with her patients through patient education and believes this is the best way to start fighting periodontal problems.  Away from work, Penny enjoys playing softball, hanging out with her two Labrador retrievers, and just relaxing at her family’s place on the Rivah!
